FAQ

  • Q. When I click the "Next" button, it says it can't reach the server. Why?
  • A. You need to be running a server program on the Mac you plan to control. This server can be downloaded here. Once you download the program, but sure to run it!

If you are running the server and it still does not work, you could be blocked by a firewall either on your Mac, or elsewhere if you are using a local router or access point. The easiest solution is to turn off the firewall on your Mac, and then create a local network. The remote server will do this automatically and there's a menu option under "File" for it.

  • Q. I am running the server, but the phone still cannot connect. What's wrong?
  • The iPhone application needs to contact your laptop via wireless.

    This means either:
        a) the iPhone and the laptop need to be on the same wireless network, or
        b) the laptop needs to "create" it's own local wireless network that the iPhone must join.

The application on the Mac will offer to help create a network for option (b), but then on the phone you need to go to the wireless settings and join it (and use DHCP). See the picture below.
    Wifi Setup Screen

If both devices are on the same network and the RemoteDestination helper in running on the laptop, then you will NOT get a message on the when saying the devices cannot connect.

One way to test the wireless connection without using any of this specific application is to see if, from the phone, you can access a web page stored on your laptop. This in itself can be complicated so set up though, unless you are already using web sharing on your laptop.

  • Q. The program is connected to my laptop, by the slide doesn't advance.
  • A. The "Next" button will only effect the FRONTMOST application. Also, if you are using Powerpoint or Keynote, the program needs to be playing the presentation (i.e. the slide should be filling up the screen). If Powerpoint is in editing mode, then "next slide" command may not be meaningful.
  • Q. What's different under Snow Leopard (does auto-configuration work)?
  • A. Your wireless needs to be turned on before you try and auto-configure a local wireless network.
  • Q. To turn off or adjust or start the firewall on my Mac, where do I look?
  • A. Look in the System Preferences, under the "Security" icon. User OS X Leopard, the firewall can be disable completely by using the setting "Allow all incoming connections" which is what we use ourselves. Under the newer "Snow Leopard," the firewall can be disabled by click the button labeled "Stop".

If you want to use a more secure firewall setting, you could try setting up as shown below (this is a picture taken from the Leopard version of OS X).

  • Q. This program does not work with my machine using Microsoft Windows? When will you support Windows?
  • A. Unfortunately, the required helper application only works with computers based on Apple's OS X. We have no current plans to support Windows as our developer group does not currently include any Windows specialists.
  • Q. How can I reach the developers or Y1D.com?
  • A. By sending email to the address support at y1d.com.
  • Q. I want to report a bug, ask a question, or suggest a feature, or make some other comment.
  • A. Try posting on the Product Support Blog.
